How to get to Štinjan (Pula)?

Štinjan is very close to the town of Pula and the Pula airport.
Below are som ways of reaching us

By plane:

  • The nearest aiport is Pula. During the tourist season there are direct flights from many cities in Europe. SAS, Norweigian, Lufthansa, Easy Jet are a few options to check out.
  • Other airports near by are Rijeka (Croatia), Trieste (Italy), or Venice (Italy). Zagreb airport is the best option during off season. If you are planning to rent a car Rijeka is a good option. It is a 1,5 hour drive to Pula from there. Check out Ryanair for flights to Rijeka.
  • From the airport in Pula you can reach the house by taxi/Uber (easiest) or take a direct shuttle bus to the Pula bus station. From the you can take a local bus to Štinjan.

By car:

  • Having a car in Istria is great as it allows you to reach all the nice spots, such as Motuvun. We someimes travel by car from our home in Stockholm. It is a 24 hour drive which we usually divide into three days. Croatia is part of EU but not Schengen, which means that there is a border crossing between Slovenia and Croatia. This can be a little busy certain times of the day.

By train:

  • Train travel is still a bit of a challenge. There is a night train between Munich and Rijeka which might be a good option. A 2 hour bus will take you from Rijeka to Pula. An Uber from Pula to the house costs about 6 Euros.

How to get around?

As Štinjan is very close to the town of Pula there is really no need for a car. However having a car for part of the visit is recommended. There are many beautiful places you will have easy access to this way, and the roads in Istria are good. Here are som ways to get around if you are not planning on driving.

Bus:

  • Štinjan is essentially a suburb of Pula and one of the local bus lines stops only 150 meters from our house. During the tourist season the buses leave about once per hour.
The bus schedule can be found here. Our bus line is called 5. The bus driver accepts cash payment.
  • Once in Pula you will find local buses to other parts of Pula and neighboring villages like Medulin, Vodnjan, Fazana, and Premanture to name a few spots.
  • From the Pula bus station you can reach destinations further away like Rovinj, Zagreb, Trieste and more. Check out this site for more info on bus travel.

Taxi / Uber / Bolt etc:

  • We often use Uber to get around. It is not always available, but there are other taxi companies as well. Ask the driver for his/her business card and you will be able call directly next time you need a ride. An Uber from Pula to the house costs about 10 Euros, to the airport about 25 Euros.  Taxi comapnies can be found here.

Bike:

  • We have two functioning bikes that are available to our guests. It is possible to go quite far up the coast on bike paths that run along the beach. Bike rentals are available here and here.

Boat:

  • From Pula you can reach Venice (Italy) by ferry. The trip takes 3,5 hours and costs about 60 Euros. There are several ferry companies running this route, so do a Google search for best result. Here is a link to get started.

How to pay for things?

In Croatia cash is king. ATMs are all over the place and they take most debit and credit cards. Most grocers and businesses will accept card payment, but for some resaurants, markets etc cash is a must. Tipping in a restaurant is always done in cash. 5-10% is appropriate.

What is close by?

Most things you need you will be able to find in Pula. However, some days you might want to stay close to the house. Štinjan is small, but there are still things you can do and get.

Food and essentials:

  • About 100 m from the house there is a tiny grocery shop. It is open daily and although really small it seems to have just about everything including a tiny deli/bakery section and a basic wine/beer selection.

Beaches:

  • Our favorite beach is reached by an 800 m walk through the forest. The best time to go is in the late afternoon when you can enjoy the sun setting and the chance of spotting dolphins. If you enjoy more people and activity there is a long beach with beach bars, boat rental etc about 1,5 km away. It's very kid friendly and has showers and plenty of parking. This beach can also be reached by the local bus if the walk seems a bit long in the hot sun. Croatian beaches have stones/pebbles and very clear water. Swimming shoes are recommended as the clean water also means sea urchins thrive there. There are shoes to use at the house and every souvenier shop will sell them.

Bike or drive to Fazana:

  • Our neighboring village Fazana is a nice visit. It can be reached by walking/biking along the beach (5 km) or by car. Fazana has beautiful beaches, a bunch of water front restaurants, and the best gelato in the area. Also don't miss a visit to Brijuni which is accessed from Fazana.
